According to a report in Forbes News magazine, AMD is to close its Geode Design Center in Logmont, Colorado. One half of the staff of 150 will be absorbed in other AMD factories; the remainder will be laid off. As is mentioned further, planned developments for Geode will not be carried out. Nevertheless, the remarks of a spokeswoman are added that AMD will continue to be active in the embedded market. In the Forbes report, a laid-off employee is reported as follows: " ... the design center was being shuttered not because of financial concerns but because AMD had changed its focus”. He said, that there have been discussions for years on the direction of the company should take.
By taking over Geode from National Semiconductor in August 2003, AMD has “bought” its way again into the embedded market, after the company earned the displeasure of industrial OEMs with the abandonment of its 386 embedded line.
