The Varta AG (micro-batteries) achieved a turnover in the year 2005 of 129.5 Euro. This amount is 11% below that of 2004. The cause of this was the sale of the Microlite shares in May of the previous year, lower profits in the segment of micro-batteries as well as the planned ending of a semi-finished supply contract with the former minority shareholding Varta Consumer Batteries. This joint venture between the Varta AG and Spectrum Brands (former Rayovac) was dissolved according to plan in September 2005 and all shares were transferred to Spectrum Brands. For this reason the business year ended with a balance sheet profit of approximately 138 m Euro. This excess resulted from the payment modalities of the remaining purchase price.
The business with hearing aid batteries developed positively and a turnover increase of 30% was achieved here. In total, in 2005, investments to the sum of 5.4 m Euro were made in the micro-battery segment. Emphasis was placed on the extensions to the lithium polymer production as well as in the areas of nickel-hydride button cells and hearing aid batteries. The number of employees in the company was reduced by 3% to 1,404 at the end of the year. The reduction inland was in contrast to the increase in the Far East. The Varta Consumer Batteries belonging to Spectrum Brands is presently affected by restructuring measures (see link below).
