Connector solutions for optical transmission of digital audio data 11-03-10

With the Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) protocol that was developed jointly by those two companies as an interface for audio data, it is possible to transmit digital audio signals nearly without data loss. Data transmission can be accomplished either electrically using a coaxial cable or optically using a fiber-optic cable. For this optical transmission option, Suyin is now presenting two new products, each with an integrated LED driver IC: The 010189FR003T101Z (F05) Toslink (Toshiba Link) jack receptacle for receiving square-cut Toslink plugs and the 010189FR008GX01ZL mini-jack receptacle for receiving optical or standard 3.5-mm stereo plugs.

The Toslink (F05) jack receptacle is an extremely sturdy, square-cut design with dimensions of 12 mm x 14 mm x 19 mm (L x W x H, overall). Three expansible plugs arranged in a triangle pattern on the bottom serve to securely anchor it on the PCB during through-hole mounting. A screw terminal block has been is integrated on the top for additional fastening of the jack receptacle on the end device’s housing.

The slot for receiving the square-cut Toslink plug has mechanical coding in accordance with the standard. The three contacts for the integrated LED driver (GND, Vcc, Vin) are designed for downward through-hole mounting. Primary areas of application: HiFi equipment, TV sets, set-top boxes, games consoles, etc.

The mini audio jack receptacle is particularly well suited for future-ready designs, because they can be used with both standard and optical audio plugs. The dimensions are 18.1 mm x 10.5 mm x 6.7 mm (L x W x H, overall). Two of the total of four contact springs ensure proper engagement of the three-pole optical 3.5-mm plug, thus ensuring mechanical latching/locking of the connection.

Together with the integrated LED driver’s three contacts (GND, Vcc, Vin) and two additional guide posts, the total of 10 through-hole contacts that can be soldered ensure particularly strong mounting on the PCB. Typical applications include: laptops, MiniDisc players, MP3 players, etc.
