A prototype for eye controlled operation of devices has been developed by the Fraunhofer IAO in Germany with the name EYCIN (Eye-Controlled Interaction). A camera observes the movements of the pupil of the user and transmits them to the device to be controlled, e.g. a PC, a TV set or radio. The software calculates the coordinates of the screen area viewed and transmits these to the cursor. The whole procedure takes place in real time. The project originated in cooperation with partners from industry and is meant to assist technical servicing or paraplegics in working with a PC. This technology can also be applied to household appliances or for interactive advertising signs.
