MultiMediaCard Association merges with JEDEC 25-09-08

MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) and JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (JEDEC) announced plans to merge certain MMCA assets, including embedded MMC (e-MMC) and miCARD specifications, trademarks and Intellectual Property rights, into JEDEC. The merger follows a partnership forged during the development of the e-MMCv4.2 and v4.3 specifications. Both organizations have forecasted next generation support for embedded memory solutions with features including: the meeting of speed requirements for next generation systems, Universal Flash Storage (UFS) and the use of XiP or DRAM to support future embedded solutions.

JEDEC develops standards for the solid-state industry. Almost 3,300 participants, appointed by some 295 companies work together in 50 JEDEC committees to meet the needs of every segment of the industry, manufacturers and consumers alike. All JEDEC standards are available online, at no charge.

MMCA was formed with a primary mission of promoting worldwide adoption of storage media devices designed especially for mobile phones and digital imaging devices. Over time this focus has shifted to a common architecture for embedded and removable solutions. Current MMCA members that are not also JEDEC members will be able to continue their membership through JEDEC until December 31, 2008 without an additional fee. Current MMCA members that are not also JEDEC members will receive 50% off JEDEC membership dues for the JC-64 Committee on Flash Memory Modules and its subcommittees for 2009.
