Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX17083, a low-voltage, step-down regulator with an internal boost switch. Designed for space-constrained applications, this device integrates dual n-channel MOSFET power switches in a 16mm² TQFN package. Supporting a continuous load current up to 5A, the internal 25mΩ, low-side power MOSFETs ensure high efficiency while reducing component count. This small step-down regulator is ideal for ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs), netbooks, portable gaming devices, and other low-power, compact applications.
The device uses a current-mode, fixed-frequency control scheme to provide an easy-to-implement architecture that does not sacrifice transient response. This architecture also provides peak-current-limit protection and operates in pulse-skipping mode to maintain high efficiency under light-load conditions. This step-down regulator produces an adjustable 0.75V to 2.7V output voltage from the system's 3.3V or 5V input supply. It is available in a space-saving, 4mm x 4mm, 24-pin TQFN package, and is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. Prices start at $2.75 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit with recommended external components is available.
