Synopsys has acquired the Analog Business Group of Mips Technologies, for $22 million in cash. The acquisition expands Synopsys' DesignWare intellectual property (IP) portfolio with a new family of analog IP such as Analog-to-Digital Converters, Digital-to-Analog Converters, Audio Codecs and Power Management. It will also add HDMI TX and RX protocols to Synopsys' existing interface IP solution.
The Analog Business Group of Mips was formed through Mips' acquisition of Chipidea Microelectronica in August 2007. Mips payed an aggregate of $147 million in cash, additional performance-based milestone payment for 2009 were planned. Chipidea was founded in February 1997 by 3 Professors of the Electronics and Computer Engineering Department of the Technical University of Lisbon. In 2007 the company had more than 310 employees worldwide, including design centers in Portugal, France, Belgium, Poland, China, Norway, and Macau.
In march 2009 Mips announced the resignation of Jose Franca, founder of Chipidea Microelectronica. He resigned to pursue his personal interests and resume his career in academics.
