Renesas Technology Europe has announced the R63400 single-chip LCD controller-driver which supports a resolution of 240 x 360 pixels and display of 260k colours. It is designed for use with LTPS TFT colour LCD panels. The R63400 integrates 240-channel time-sharing source output with circuitry for transferring control signals to the panel’s gate circuits and power supply circuitry in a single chip. It incorporates 194.4 kbytes of on-chip graphics RAM and functions designed to reduce power consumption and increase battery life, such as high-speed burst RAM write, deep-standby and 8-colour display mode. The controller offers a new display rotation function that makes it possible to flip the display 180 degrees without using the RGB interface to change the transfer sequence of the display data. An independent RGB gamma adjustment function allows separate gamma settings for the red, green and blue signal components. The R63400 has user-selectable settings for display characteristics such as the signals for interfacing with the panel, control timing and voltage levels. Additional features provide support for a wide variety of systems include RGB 6-, 16-, and 18-bit interfaces and a VSYNC interface for moving image data. System interfaces include high-speed 8-, 9-, 16-, and 18-bit interfaces and a clock-synchronous serial interface. The controller’s mounting method is chip on glass (COG). Sample shipments will begin in May 2005.
