Weidmüller: Industrial Ethernet products with Class I / Division 2 certification 14-04-08

All of Weidmüller’s products from its ‘Advanced Line’, ‘Wave Line’, ‘ECO Line’, its ‘family of switches and routers’ as well as its ‘media converters’ have received Class I / Division 2 certification. Certification issued by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) in the USA as well as the Canadian Standards Association means that there are no restrictions on the use of Weidmüller's products throughout the USA and Canada. The description Class I Div 2 states that a piece of electrical equipment will not be the source of ignition in an explosive atmosphere. That applies to normal operations as well as when operating under defined abnormal operating conditions.

The description of potentially explosive atmospheres used in German speaking countries is known in the USA as Hazardous (Classified) Locations. The Class defines areas in which flammable gases, vapours or liquids (Class I), dusts (Class II) or fibres and flyings (Class III) are present in quantities that represent a potential explosion hazard. Hazardous areas are traditionally divided into Division 1 and Division 2 depending on the frequency and duration of which these substances are present. UL certification can be seen as a synonym for conformity with the safety standards; for instance, a product designation with this certification mark opens the door to the American market. Moreover, this certification is not only a significant factor for the North American market, but also for many countries in the world where it serves as a means of orientation.
